Understanding how UV kills viruses
There are three types of UV rays. You will have heard of UVA and UVB the ultraviolet rays that reach the earth's surface that cause sunburn. UVC light has a higher energy due to its shorter wavelength 100-280 nm (nanometre) thankfully these rays are filtered by the atmosphere and does not reach the earth’s surface. UVC light destroys the molecular bonds between the DNA of microorganisms, disabling their ability to function or reproduce. UV-C has been artificially produced since its founding in 1878 and has been widely used on high-touch surfaces in hospitals to eliminate bacteria, viruses and even superbugs which have developed a resistance to antibiotic drugs.
Generally you only need 2-10 mJ/cm2 to kill most if not all germs and bugs (millijoule per square metre). Studies have shown that all bacteria and viruses including the coronaviruses respond to germacidal UVC light, specifically between 200-280nm (nanometre). Due to the concentration of UVC light and its ability to destroy genetic material, our highly trained staff follow strict health and safety protocals.
Schools, office buildings and stores can be sterilised safely during lockdown ready for employees, clients or tenants as soon as the lockdown ends. We would like to offer this sterilisation service particularly during this lockdown period, while most businesses are closed or on skeleton crew to effectively and safely decontaminate these areas with minimal disruption.
UVC Sterilisation is an environmentally friendly method of decontaminating surfaces by minimising the use of toxic chemicals and their harmful odours.
Please note that this process does not clean dirty surfaces, however by eliminating the germs, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection. Lustre provides a deep cleaning service, once pathogens have been eliminated by the Ultraviolet Light Treatment.
As members of Prequal and Site Safe we are more than prepared to provide this service to any site and can prepare any health and safety documentation that will be required.
